Course Outline

Course Outline

This course combines theoretical learning with practical exercises, focusing on the operation, safety checks, and records of knuckle boom lifts. You will learn how to conduct thorough safety inspections, operate the lift in various environments, and perform post-operation checks to ensure equipment integrity.

Key Training Components:

Safety Pre-Checks

Before using a knuckle boom lift, it’s critical to conduct safety pre-checks to ensure the machine is safe to operate. These checks should be done thoroughly to identify potential hazards and prevent accidents during operation. Key pre-checks include:

  • Visual Inspection: Check the lift for any visible damage or wear, including the boom, arms, platform, and overall structure. Look for cracks, bends, or missing components.
  • Hydraulic System: Ensure that the hydraulic system is functioning properly, with no leaks or signs of wear. Check the hydraulic fluid levels and ensure the boom operates smoothly.
  • Power Systems: Confirm that the machine’s power source (battery or fuel) is fully charged or filled. Ensure that all electrical systems, including lights and alarms, are working.
  • Stability: Ensure the stabilisers or outriggers if fitted, are fully deployed and the lift is positioned on level ground. Check for any hazards in the surrounding area that could affect stability.
  • Safety Features: Test emergency lowering functions and other safety features, including emergency stop buttons and limit switches.

Safe Operation of the Knuckle Boom Lift

The course will guide you on how to safely operate the knuckle boom lift in a variety of scenarios, focusing on preventing accidents and ensuring maximum efficiency. Key operating procedures include:

  • Control Familiarity: Learn how to use the lift’s control systems, including extending and retracting the boom, operating the platform, and controlling lift speed and movement.
  • Proper Use of the Boom: Understand the best techniques for using the knuckle boom’s articulated boom to reach difficult or narrow spaces safely. Always operate within the manufacturer’s weight limits and safe operational guidelines.
  • Stability and Positioning: Ensure the machine is stable at all times. When extending the boom, always ensure the lift is on solid, level ground and that the stabilisers if fitted, are fully deployed.
  • Safe Working at Height: Maintain a safe posture while operating the platform. Always keep within the platform and avoid leaning out too far. Ensure all personnel are aware of the lift’s movements.
  • Hazard Awareness: Identify and avoid hazards such as overhead power lines, uneven surfaces, or obstacles in the path of the boom. Always have a clear work area to avoid accidents.

Safety Post-Checks

After the operation, safety post-checks are vital to ensure the knuckle boom lift is safe and ready for future use. These checks ensure the equipment is secured, maintained, and properly stored. Post-checks include:

  • Lowering and Securing the Lift: Lower the boom and platform completely to the ground. Ensure all parts of the lift are fully retracted and locked in place.
  • Power Down: Turn off the lift’s power source and ensure it is safely shut down. Disconnect the battery if necessary.
  • Inspection for Damage: Inspect the lift for any new damage that may have occurred during use, such as dents, scratches, or hydraulic leaks. Clean the lift to remove any debris or dirt.
  • Stabilisers and Outriggers: Check that all stabilisers and outriggers if fitted, are retracted properly and securely.
