Course Outline

Course Outline

The course combines theoretical learning with practical application to ensure that workers are proficient in selecting, and using height safety equipment in various work environments. You will gain a comprehensive understanding of fall protection systems, as well as the legal and safety requirements for working at height.

Key Training Components:

Understanding Height Safety Equipment

  • Types of Height Safety Equipment: Learn about the different types of height safety equipment commonly used in the workplace, including:
  • Fall Arrest Harnesses: Learn how to select and properly fit fall arrest harnesses, including the correct attachment points for lanyards.
  • Lanyards and Lifelines: Understand the purpose and types of lanyards (shock-absorbing, restraint, etc.) and how to use them with height safety systems.
  • Self-Retracting Lanyards (SRLs): Learn about self-retracting lanyards and their role in providing fall protection, while maintaining mobility.
  • Anchorage Points: Understand the importance of selecting suitable and secure anchorage points that can withstand the forces of a fall.
  • Work Positioning and Restraint Equipment: Learn about equipment used for safe positioning and restraint, such as adjustable rope lanyards and positioning straps.

Correct Use and Application of Height Safety Equipment

  • Proper Fitting of Harnesses: Learn the correct procedures for fitting and adjusting fall arrest harnesses to ensure they are comfortable and secure.
  • Connecting to Anchorage Points: Understand how to properly connect your harness and lanyard to a secure anchorage point, ensuring that the connection is reliable and compliant with safety standards.
  • Fall Protection Systems: Gain knowledge of how fall arrest systems work, including the use of shock-absorbing lanyards and ropes. Learn how to work safely while using these systems, whether you’re on a ladder, scaffold, or elevated platform.
  • Inspection & Servicing: Understand the procedures for inspecting height safety equipment before and after use and learn how to service it to ensure it remains in safe working condition. This includes checking for wear, damage, and ensuring that all components function properly.

Legislative Requirements and Safe Work Practices

  • Workplace Health and Safety Act (HSWA): Learn about the legal responsibilities for employers and employees when using height safety equipment, as outlined under the Health and Safety at Work Act (HSWA).
  • Compliance with Standards: Understand the relevant industry standards, including those from WorkSafe New Zealand, that govern the use of height safety equipment in the workplace.
  • Risk Assessment and Hazard Control: Gain the knowledge needed to perform risk assessments for work at height and implement hazard control measures to minimise the risk of falls. Learn to assess environmental factors such as weather, ground conditions, and equipment suitability.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Learn the importance of using complementary PPE (e.g., helmets, gloves, and non-slip footwear) alongside height safety equipment to further reduce risks while working at height.

Emergency Procedures and Rescue Plans

  • Emergency Response: Learn how to respond in the event of a fall, including how to activate rescue procedures and safely retrieve someone from height.
  • Rescue Equipment: Understand the different types of rescue equipment available and how to use it effectively in emergency situations, including rescue ropes, winches, and lowering devices.
  • Communication During Emergencies: Learn how to establish clear communication protocols during rescue operations to ensure a quick and efficient response.

Practical Application and Hands-On Training

  • Simulated Scenarios: Engage in practical exercises where you will use height safety equipment in controlled, real-world scenarios. This ensures you gain confidence in applying your knowledge and skills on the job.
  • Equipment Familiarisation: Hands-on training with various pieces of height safety equipment, including harnesses, lanyards, and anchorage devices. You will practice the correct techniques for fitting, using, and maintaining the equipment.
