The Class 2 licence course covers Unit Standard 17574, a Heavy Rigid Vehicle with a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) of more than 6,000kg to a maximum of not more than 18,000kg or combination vehicle with a Gross Combination Mass (GCM) of more than 6,000kg to a maximum of not more than 12,000kg.

  • Written and oral English skills equivalent to NCEA Level 1 (Year 11) or an IELTS score of 5.5 or higher

DAY 1

Theory; US 24089, Demonstrate knowledge of fatigue management, work time, and driver logbook requirements that includes:

  • Identify causes and symptoms of fatigue, and effects of fatigue on driving performance.
  • Describe life management skills and work related measures that can be implemented to prevent fatigue.
  • Identify the work time requirements and penalties prescribed by legislation.
  • Identify driver logbook requirements and associated penalties prescribed by legislation.
  • Describe the management of work time records contained in driver logbooks, and identify associated penalties prescribed by legislation.
  • Complete driver logbook entries.


DAY 2

Theory; Unit Standard 17574, Operate a rigid vehicle to meet the requirements for a full Class 2 driver licence that includes:

  • Identify driving hazards associated with a rigid vehicle and describe measures to reduce the risks associated with the identified hazards.
  • Describe requirements relating to safe loading of a rigid vehicle and driving techniques that minimise the adverse effects of a high centre of gravity.
  • Carry out a pre-use walk-around inspection of a rigid vehicle.
  • Drive a rigid vehicle efficiently in different traffic and road conditions
  • Manoeuvre a rigid vehicle in reverse.
  • Complete driver logbook entries.
  • Practical training drive. (You must pass Unit Standard 24089 before you can engage the practical training drive)

Need To Know

  • Students that hold Unit Standard 24089, Demonstrate knowledge of fatigue management, work time, and driver logbook requirements will need to provide evidence that you have completed this unit standard. This can be either a copy of your NZQA Record of Learning also known as Record of Achievement showing the Unit Standard on it of a copy of the NZTA driver licence certificate with the Unit Standard on it
  • You will not be able to sit Unit Standard 17574 or do any of the practical drives without a class 2 learner license.
  • This licence is issued to allow you to drive a Class 2 vehicle on a New Zealand road while you are waiting for your new licence to arrive (Up to 4 weeks).
  • YOU ARE NOT LICENSED TO DRIVE A CLASS 2 VEHICLE ON A NEW ZEALAND ROAD WITHOUT A SUPERVISOR UNTIL you have submitted your NZ Transport Agency Certificate to either VTNZ or AA and received your (Temporary) Full Class 2 licence
