What is SAFED?

SAFED stands for Safe and Fuel Efficient Driving. It is a structured, one-on-one driver training and assessment programme that helps drivers:

• Reduce fuel consumption
• Lower vehicle emissions
• Minimise vehicle wear and tear
• Drive with greater anticipation and control

Developed in line with NZTA guidelines and international best practices, SAFED has been widely adopted in the UK, New Zealand, and Australia.

Core Principles of SAFED

Our SAFED training is built around 17 key driving elements, focusing on:

• Progressive gear shifting
• Driving in the correct torque range
• Acceleration sense and speed management
• Anticipation and hazard awareness
• Use of auxiliary braking systems
• Minimising idling and over-revving
• Smoother cornering and roundabout handling
• Efficient use of cruise control and braking

Each participant is assessed at the beginning and end of the course, allowing for measurable improvement.

Course Format

• Duration: One full day (individual driver coaching) Maximum 2 drivers per day course
• Includes: Pre- and post-assessment drives, classroom theory, in-cab coaching, and written feedback
• Vehicle: Must be conducted in your own compliant commercial vehicle (or one arranged by Know The Rule)
