Our Wheels Tracks & Rollers courses meets the minimum requirements of the NZ Transport Agency for people who intend applying for US16701 (wheels) and/or US16702 (Rollers) and/or US16703 (Tracks) endorsement to their driver licence so they will become legally entitled to drive special-type wheeled, and/or special-type roller and/or special-type tracked vehicles on roads.

For Unit Standard 16701 – Wheels (W)

  • Written and oral English skills equivalent to NCEA Level 1 (Year 11) or an IELTS score of 5.5 or higher
  • NZ Full Class 1 licence for special type wheeled vehicles with a Gross Laden Weight (GLW) of no more than 6000kg ora GLW of 6,001kgs but not more than 18,000kg and driven at a speed not exceeding 30km/h
  • NZ Full Class 2 licence for special type wheeled vehicles with a GLW of 6,001kgs but not more than 18,000kgs and driven at a speed greater than 30kmph ora GLW of 18,001kgs or more and driven at a speed not exceeding 30km/h
  • NZ Full Class 4 licence for special type wheeled vehicles with a GLW of 18,001kgs or more if driven at a speed exceeding 30km/h


For Unit Standard 16702 – Rollers (R)

  • Written and oral English skills equivalent to NCEA Level 1 (Year 11) or an IELTS score of 5.5 or higher
  • NZ Full Class 1 licence for special type roller vehicles with a GLW of no more than 18,000kgs
  • NZ Full Class 2 licence for special type roller vehicles with a GLW of 18,001kgs or more


For Unit Standard 16703 – Tracks (T)

  • Written and oral English skills equivalent to NCEA Level 1 (Year 11) or an IELTS score of 5.5 or higher
  • NZ Full Class 1 licence for special type roller vehicles with a GLW of no more than 18,000kgs
  • NZ Full Class 2 licence for special type roller vehicles with a GLW of 18,001kgs or more

Theory: approximately 4 hours / Practical: 30 min per person and includes

  • Pre-vehicle safety checks
  • The safe operation of the equipment being used
  • Driving and reversing around a course
  • Safe parking and storage

People credited with either or all of these unit standards are able to:

  • Describe a special-type wheeled, a special-type roller or a special-type tracked vehicle and the legal requirements relating to driving the vehicle on a road
  • Describe driving procedures and general considerations for driving a special-type wheeled, a special-type roller or a special-type tracked vehicle safely on a road
  • Demonstrate procedures for driving a special-type wheeled, a special-type roller or a special-type tracked vehicle safely and legally on a road


Practical drives: 

All practical drives are completed in accordance with Connexis National Standards as required by NZ Transport Agency guidelines. Upon successful completion of Unit Standard(s) 16701(W), or and 16702(R), or and 16703(T) you will be issued with a NZ Transport Agency Driver Licence and Endorsement Certificate from Know The Rule to take to a NZ Transport Agency Licensing Agency where they will process your application to have the appropriate endorsement(s) added to your Driver licence.

  • Where the assessment is to be conducted on a vehicle requiring a Class 1 full licence, the assessment may be undertaken on a current New Zealand Class 1 restricted licence or current overseas equivalent to New Zealand Class 1 full licence. However, applicants are unable to apply for a ‘W’ ‘T’ & ‘R’ endorsement until a New Zealand Class 1 full licence is held.
  • YOU ARE NOT LICENSED TO OPERATE A SPECIAL-TYPE VEHICLE ON A NEW ZEALAND ROAD WITHOUT A SUPERVISOR UNTIL you have submitted your NZ Transport Agency Certificate to either VTNZ or AA and received your (Temporary) licence
